Professor Tom Eirik Mollnes, founder and leader of the Norwegian Complement Research group, has received an honorary doctorate degree for his groundbreaking complement system research and his long-lasting cooperation with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark with the highest honors expressed by Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark.

The honorary doctorate ceremony took place at the University o Copenhagen. The Dean highlighted that Professor Mollnes “developed a new methodology for detection of activation of the complement system, which led to a paradigm shift in complement research.” Furthermore, it was Professor Mollnes who “realized that the complement system is not only beneficial in the host defense but when over-activated turned to be the body’s worst enemy. It is the immune over-activation that leads to the death of a patient, and not the bacteria.” The main aim of the NCRG was recognized as “the implementation of new drug strategies to the benefit of the patients.” 

The ceremony was concluded in a private audience with Her Majesty the Queen  Margrethe II of Denmark.

The Norwegian Complement Research group heartily congratulates Tom Eirik and is very proud to have him as an inspiring leader and role model!
